Trump chooses Nikki Haley as US Ambassador to UN

nikki-haleyA small village at the border district of Tarantarn in Punjab is thrilled that Nikki Haley, the South Carolina governor has been named by US President-elect Donald Trump as the ambassador to the United Nations. Nikki Haley may have been born in the United States as her father Ajit Singh Randhawa moved to the US in the late 1960’s, but for her extended family back in Pandori Ram Singh village in Tarantaran district of Punjab.
Nikki Haley’s parents belonged from rural Punjab in northwestern India. They then moved to Amritsar where we have the famous Golden Temple. Then in the early 1960s they emigrated to North America. Haley, 44, was born in Nimrata Randhawa in Bamberg, South Carolina. As a child she was called Nikki. She married Michael in Sikh and Methodist ceremonies in 1996 and took his family name.
Haley came only once to India when she was just 4 years old. She doesn’t know how to speak in Punjabi and has converted to Christianity. She recently got another chance to visit India in November 2014 for an official capacity during which she headed to Amritsar and called it ‘an emotional and very personal day’. On that day Haley spoke about how she always wanted to see Punjab, her motherland and how much proud she is to be there after 40 long years.
