Former Punjab CM Surjit Singh Barnala passes away

surjeet-singh-barnala-diesFormer Punjab Chief Minister Surjit Singh Barnala passed away after prolonged illness at PGI, Chandigarh on Saturday. He was 91. He served as Punjab CM from 29 September 1985 to 11 June 1987. Barnala had remained Governor of Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and also a minister at the Centre. Barnala contested the election for the first time in 1952 but lost. He was elected to Parliament in 1977 and was inducted in the Morarji Desai government as agriculture minister. Barnala was instrumental in setting up Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
Barnala was born on October 21, 1925 in Ateli Haryana. He was also involved in Quit India Movement in 1942. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the demise of Surjit Singh Barnala. In a tweet, Prime Minster said his rich service and contribution to the nation will be remembered. Pained by demise of Shri Surjit Singh Barnala. His rich service & contribution to the nation will be remembered. Condolences to his family.
