8 Dead After School Bus falls into Drain near Amritsar

8 children were killed and 17 others injured when a school bus fell into a canal near Border Out Post (BOP) Mahawa near Attari today. All children were between seven and 14 years old and belong to the nearby villages of Tibbi, Muhawa and Neshta. The incident took place when the school bus, carrying 37 students, was passing over a narrow bridge, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamalpreet Singh said.
Van driver Charanjit Singh fled after breaking open a window. “The driver was speeding and driving rashly. He joined duty only on Monday. I warned him about the narrow bridge ahead that doesn’t have railings but he didn’t listen. Suddenly the front tyres were in the air and we landed in the drain,” said Class 11 student Karambir Singh. The van was taking students back home from MKD DAV Public School, Neshta, when the accident took place at 1.30pm.
Amritsar’s senior superintendent of police (rural) Harkamal Preet Singh said there were 7 confirmed deaths. “We have called divers from Beas and Harike for the rescue mission to check the bottom of the drain, injured were rushed to hospital,” he informed. Singh said that the police was i the process registering a case under section 304 of IPC against Satnam Singh and Tarsem Kumar Bawa — driver and owner of the school bus, respectively, adding that both of them were absconding.
